About the school

Founded in 2001 by a grassroots neighborhood coalition of parents and local educators, TSMS quickly grew into an award-winning NYC public school, named both Rising Star and Outstanding Middle School in the annual Blackboard Awards. Tompkins Square Middle School is a joyful and inclusive learning community built on thoughtful instruction that is responsive to student needs, in classrooms with caring teachers where students feel heard. TSMS is the rare NYC middle school with not only a dynamic core academic curriculum but also a full, rich arts experience (Music, Art, Theater, and Dance departments, all of which teach during the school day!) to strengthen adolescent development. And now as a member of the DOE’s small class-size pilot, we also finally have the luxury of private school numbers. We are early adolescent specialists at TSMS, students enter as inquisitive children and leave as curious and confident young adults, members of a truly diverse lifelong community that supports them.
