About the school
P.S. 126/MAT (Jacob Riis School) is a vibrant 3K-8 school in the heart of Chinatown, where a caring community and strong relationships allow teachers to truly know, support, and challenge every child. From our youngest learners through middle school, students thrive in a creative and rigorous academic environment that emphasizes foundational literacy, inquiry, collaboration, public speaking, and social-emotional learning. Technology is embedded across all core subjects, with hands-on opportunities in computer science, coding, animation, robotics, and STEM. Beginning in 3rd grade, eligible students may participate in our Gifted & Talented program (Grades 3-5). By middle school, all students are prepared to take Biology and Algebra I Regents exams, as well as the Spanish Proficiency exam, ensuring strong high school readiness. P.S. 126/MAT offers a rich arts and enrichment program, including visual arts, band, percussion, and fine arts majors, along with partnerships with 3rd Street Music, CREA, ArtsWork, and Chess NYC. Students also enjoy swimming, access to outdoor fields, and an extensive competitive athletics program with 23 sports, with 5th graders eligible to participate and receiving priority admission to our middle school. Our school celebrates the diversity of our community through cultural events and offers afterschool programs, including coding, STEM, dance, and holiday camps. With small class sizes, strong SEL supports, and access to middle school teachers for elementary students, P.S. 126/MAT is a place where children grow into confident, curious, and compassionate learners; ready for success in high school and beyond.
