About the school

Welcome to PS/MS 149 Sojourner Truth, respectfully known as Sotru, where Leaders are Created to Change the World. We are devoted to making an impactful change in the lives of students and their families. Our instruction goes beyond the classroom, preparing students for a successful future by building on everyday experiences. In addition to our strong academic framework, students are exposed to geographic areas outside of New York City through annual trips to Washington D.C. and upstate New York, where they learn to ski and snowboard. To ensure student success, we have partnered with the Harlem Children's Zone (HCZ) after-school program. HCZ offers a variety of activities, including dance, science fairs, skateboarding, lacrosse, and a year-round basketball camp. We also believe in the importance of social emotional health. Through our partnership with the New York Foundling Mental Health Clinic, we offer daily services right in the school building to support the mental health of our community. As a community school, we provide additional support to families with a school store, a care closet, and a laundry room, as well as school supplies and uniforms for students. With the support of our community and staff, our vision of creating future leaders is possible.
