About the school
At PS/IS 173, we are dedicated to creating a vibrant community where all students engage in high-level, rigorous academic learning. We hold high expectations for our diverse student body and leverage the unique strengths of our staff to meet the needs of every learner. Our K-3rd grade classes utilize a phonics program grounded in the Science of Reading research, ensuring a solid foundation in literacy. For our K-8th grade English Language Arts curriculum, we implement the knowledge-building approach of Expeditionary Learning, while our math instruction is guided by the problem-based curriculum, Illustrative Math. Our instructional practices align with the key priorities of our District and NYC, specifically NYC Reads and NYC Solves, to create cohesive learning experiences across all classrooms. We believe in educating the whole child, employing a social-emotional approach that emphasizes recognizing emotions and developing healthy strategies for emotional regulation and expression. In grades 4-8, students have the opportunity to participate in various sports, including boys' and girls' basketball, soccer, a boys' baseball team, and a girls' volleyball team. We also partner with Studio in a School to enhance our visual arts program, ensuring that all students have access to creative opportunities. Throughout the year, students engage in dance, music, and writing residencies with organizations such as Behind the Book and the Dance Project of Washington Heights. Additionally, our Middle School students participate in a study with Weill Cornell Medical at NY Presbyterian, exploring various STEM careers. We are also proud to offer a School-Based Mental Health Clinic. We aim to create a nurturing environment that fosters academic success and personal growth for all students.
