About the school

Our PS/MS 278 community is dedicated to the success of all students. While we offer a rigorous academic curriculum culminating in the 8th Grade Algebra Regents, we prioritize a whole-child approach to learning providing an environment where students can thrive academically, socially, emotionally, and physically. Our talented instructors implement the Schoolwide Enrichment Model (SEM), creating dynamic opportunities for student engagement across the arts, sciences, and beyond. Enrichment experiences include visual arts, music, STEM, Career Day, Science and Robotics Fairs, as well as concerts and classroom showcases that celebrate student learning. To ensure academic growth for all, we offer a range of extended learning opportunities, including After School, Holiday Break, and Saturday Academies, as well as a Junior High School Art Portfolio Program to support aspiring artists. We are proud of our vibrant partnerships, which expand what's possible for our students. These include a school-based mental health clinic and prevention team through Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital; 92nd Street Y Music and Dance; after-school sports such as basketball, volleyball, softball, cheerleading, and track & field at the Armory; ICS/Compass free after school and holiday programming; Center for Arts Education; Creative Arts Works; and The Situation Project, which brings middle school students to two Broadway productions each year. Our school day is supported by family-friendly programming including a free early drop-off breakfast program beginning at 7:30 a.m. and after-school programs available Monday through Friday for all grades.
