About the school
Lyons Community School is a small, public middle and high school in Brooklyn serving grades 6-12. With intentionally small class sizes, Lyons is designed for students who thrive when they are known well, supported deeply, and challenged meaningfully. Learning at Lyons is personal and purposeful. Students build strong academic skills, explore real-world interests, and develop into confident, thoughtful young adults. Our close-knit environment allows teachers to work closely with students and families to support both academic growth and social-emotional development. Lyons provides comprehensive special education services, including Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT), individualized accommodations, and targeted supports aligned to students’ IEPs. Special education teachers collaborate with classroom teachers and support staff to ensure students with diverse learning needs are challenged and successful. We also offer strong support for English Language Learners, with dedicated language instruction and integrated support within content-area classes. English learners are full members of the school community and are supported to build academic language, confidence, and independence. As a member of the New York State Performance Standards Consortium, Lyons uses Performance-Based Assessment Tasks (PBATs) instead of most Regents exams (only the ELA Regents is required). Students demonstrate learning through research, experiments, projects, and presentations, building strong writing, critical thinking, and presentation skills. Learning extends beyond the classroom through internships, weekly field studies, arts, and social justice projects. Through Career Readiness & Modern Youth Apprenticeship (CRMYA) and Future Ready NYC, eligible students access paid internships.
