About the school

AtMiddle School 136, we provide students with access to a rigorous and engaging curriculum aligned to the New York State Next Generation Learning Standards. Our instructional program is designed to build on students’ strengths, lived experiences, cultures, and interests while ensuring all students have access to grade-level content and opportunities for academic success. Students have the opportunity to become bilingual and biliterate through our Spanish Dual Language Program or study French as a World Language. Our school also prioritizes the development of the whole child by embedding social-emotional learning, restorative practices, advisory, and Dewey’s 4 C’s - Curiosity, Collaboration, Commitment, and Courage -—into daily instruction and school culture. Beyond the classroom, students can explore their interests and talents through a variety of extracurricular activities, leadership opportunities, sports teams, and student clubs. Students may participate in programs such as visual arts, theater, dance, vocal and instrumental music, debate, student government, NJHS, athletics, and other enrichment experiences that foster confidence, leadership, and personal growth. At Dewey, we are committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment where every student feels valued, challenged, and empowered. We believe in educating the whole child and preparing students to thrive in high school, college, careers, and beyond. Diversity in Admissions (DIA): Priority is given to applicants eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, students in temporary housing, and English Language Learners for 52% of available seats.
