About the school

William McKinley IS 259, a Title 1 middle school in Brooklyn Bay Ridge, serves grades 6-8 with rigorous academics including screened Independent Investigations Method (IIM) and Virtual Enterprises Junior Ventures (VEJV) programs, a Mandarin Dual Language program, and Regents-tracked coursework in Algebra, Living Environment, and U.S. History available to all students. Acceptance into the Virtual Enterprise and/or Independent Investigations Method programs will limit a student's scheduling options for certain other electives. However, we offer nearly all electives after school (and many before school) for students who do not have room in their daytime schedule but still wish to participate. Students benefit from two upgraded air-conditioned gyms, Promethean Interactive Boards and laptops in every classroom, state-of-the-art auditorium lighting and sound, and hands-on science labs with major upgrades. The school offers a robust Visual and Performing Arts program, including Advanced String Orchestra and Marching Band, along with a wide range of extracurriculars such as robotics, culinary arts, sports, student government, and leadership clubs. McKinley emphasizes social-emotional wellness and community engagement through after-school programs, parent involvement, and partnerships with local organizations, preparing students to be bilingual, biliterate, and bicultural global citizens ready for high school and beyond.
