About the school

The John Dewey Annex was founded to expand opportunity,—ensuring that all students in our community have access to a coherent, rigorous, and supportive academic pathway beginning in middle school and extending seamlessly through high school graduation. As John Dewey High School evolves into a 6-12 campus, the annex represents a purposeful commitment to early investment in students’ academic identity, skill development, and sense of belonging. Too often, students arrive in high school without the academic habits, confidence, or exposure needed to fully access advanced coursework and specialized programs. The annex addresses this gap by creating a middle school experience that is intentionally aligned with high school expectations, while still honoring the developmental needs of younger learners. At its core, the annex exists to: Build a strong academic foundation in Grades 6-8 Provide early access to high school-level thinking and opportunities Ensure equity in preparation for college, careers, and life Create a smaller, more personalized environment within a large, diverse school community The result is a school model where every student is known, supported, and prepared long before they enter the high-stakes years of high school.
