About the school
Middle School 890 is a small, tight-knit learning community of just over 300 students that is geared toward student-centered learning and preparation for the real-world through the School-wide Enrichment Model (SEM). Our students are part of one of four academies: Politics & Law, Visual & Performing Arts, Medical & Biological Sciences, and Business, Economics, & Industries. These academies provide a focused enrichment experience throughout their time at MS890. We also offer a range of studio classes that cultivate diverse skills and inspire new interests. Some of our enrichment course offerings include: Urban Agriculture, Genetics, Food Science, Journalism, Chess, Criminal Law, Robotics, Finance, Debate, and Musical Theater. Students have the opportunity of taking advanced courses resulting in regents exams and high school credits, including Algebra 1, Living Environment and Spanish Language Proficiency. Students have a daily advisory period to focus on social-emotional development in a small group setting. We have a robust arts program that includes dance, theater, general music, violin, guitar, band and visual art. Through partnerships with community organizations, students have the opportunity to explore their interests in a fun and engaging environment - which is evidenced by one of the highest attendance rates in the district and city and above-average scores on New York State ELA and Math exams.
