About the school
At I.S. 5 We Talk Like Scholars, Write Like Experts, Think Like Innovators and Live Like Leaders! Students appreciate that I.S. 5 provides them with a welcoming, affirming and nurturing environment that pairs the development of academic strengths with the deepening of socio-emotional skills to prepare our young people to be dynamic leaders. At I.S. 5 we have four Communities, each with an assigned assistant principal and school counselor who work with students through all three years. Our I.S. 5 Scholars, Experts, Innovators and Leaders all engage in weekly advisory classes that champion our I.S. 5 Core Values: respect, integrity, empathy, accountability and, most importantly, building connection and community with each other. I.S. 5 academics include a unified and rigorous shared curriculum, paired with a range of learning opportunities to address areas of need and enrichment during our What I Need (WIN) periods. Our students have opportunities to learn about their future through career days, guest speakers, school trips, performances and exciting partnerships with high schools, colleges and professional organizations. From hands-on projects that highlight citizenship and contribution, to science investigations, to math explorations, to literacy spotlights on the lived experiences of our students, we believe at I.S. 5 that our studies stretch well beyond the classroom. Our current curriculum offers World Language Spanish, Fine and Performing Arts classes, Computer Science, Civic Leadership, and Financial Literacy. We are proud to offer The I.S. 5 Dual Language Program in Spanish and The I.S. 5 Leadership in STEM Program, each of which provide another avenue for students to join our amazing school. We hope you consider being a part of the I.S. 5 school community!
